History and Objectives of the Association The AFIT Association of Graduates was founded in 1979 in conjunction with the observance of the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the Institute. Lt General Lawrence A. Skantze served as president of a founding committee of 17 members. Membership grew to over 1500 members in the first year of existence. The original objectives of the organization were to:
Originally, regular membership was open only to those persons who have been granted a formal academic degree in residence, or from a civilian institution as a result of AFIT sponsorship. Honorary and Associate memberships were offered to others desiring membership. Voting and the holding of office was limited to regular members. With the creation of the AFIT Foundation in 1989, the members of the AFIT Association of Graduates voted to merge with the Foundation in order to serve better the Institute and its alumni. At that time, membership in the AOG was expanded to include the following three categories: AFIT Faculty, AFIT Graduate, AFIT Student and Associate (Friend of AFIT). Any AOG member is eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees of the AFIT Foundation. Association Recognition of Alumni The Founding Committee of the AFIT AOG instituted a means of recognizing AFIT graduates whose contributions not only reflected their AFIT education, but also significantly enhanced the Air Force mission. The recipients of the AFIT Association of Graduates Award are AFIT graduates who have made significant contributions to our nation and who, through their inquisitive minds and extraordinary achievements exemplify the AFIT ideal of excellence through knowledge. AFIT AOG Recognized Distinguished Alumni The Retired Faculty Committee Retired members of the faculty of the resident graduate schools have formed an organization for the purpose of keeping in contact with each other, and with the Institute. The group holds semi-annual luncheons, distributes a newsletter, and provides recognition of the contributions of former members of the faculty. More information and Newsletters. |
